Providing A Safe And Comforting Place For Males 12-21 Since 1988

Discover transformative services at Waccamaw Youth Center for males ages 12-21. Brighter futures built on life changing commitment

Waccamaw Youth Center's History

WYC was initially established in 1988 under the name Advocating for Children’s Community Treatment. Recognizing the pressing need for a dedicated facility to serve abused, neglected, and abandoned boys in Horry County, the organization was incorporated as Waccamaw Youth Center in April 1991. This initiative was a direct response to a study highlighting the lack of long-term residential care options for adolescent males in the region.

After years of planning and community support, WYC officially opened its doors in February 2001. Since then, it has provided a safe haven and comprehensive care for over 200 young men, offering them the stability and support needed to overcome their challenging circumstances.

How Waccamaw Youth Center Serves The Community

As the only low-management group home in Horry County, WYC is dedicated to keeping adolescents within their community while providing essential long-term therapeutic services. The center focuses on fostering positive self-esteem, advancing academic and vocational abilities, and teaching life skills necessary for residents to become productive, contributing members of society.

WYC’s programs are designed to help young men grow beyond their painful experiences, discover the happiness and security that can be reached through healthy, nurturing relationships, and ultimately, find a place to call home.
