How Waccamaw Youth Center Serves The Community
As the only low-management group home in Horry County, WYC is dedicated to keeping adolescents within their community while providing essential long-term therapeutic services. The center focuses on fostering positive self-esteem, advancing academic and vocational abilities, and teaching life skills necessary for residents to become productive, contributing members of society.
WYC’s programs are designed to help young men grow beyond their painful experiences, discover the happiness and security that can be reached through healthy, nurturing relationships, and ultimately, find a place to call home.

Community Is Key To Waccamaw Youth Center's Continuing Success
In May 2025, WYC celebrated the opening of a new multipurpose facility designed to support residents transitioning into independent living. This space serves multiple functions, including dining, recreation, and hosting workshops focused on life and career skills. The facility was made possible through a generous $100,000 donation from Charles B. Jordan and a successful fundraising campaign led by Leadership Conway. The building was named in memory of Steve Powell, a dedicated supporter of WYC.
Community Engagement:
WYC actively engages with the local community and has received support from various organizations. For instance, Horry-Georgetown Technical College employees organized a “blue jeans week” fundraiser, raising over $1,175 and collecting essential items for the center during the holiday season. Additionally, WYC hosts fundraisers and events to foster community involvement and support for its mission.
